Flawed

Flawed
By Cecelia Ahern

Shocking…is Vivian really reading a dystopian again and sort-of-contemporary?!
Trust me, I’m as shock as you are. In fact, I dought this book simply because the beautiful and unique cover plus it has on sale when I was buying other books…so ta dah! I finished one of the most shocking book I’ve ever read. And I gave it 4 stars…in a very different reason.
But I can now understand why people read, why they like to get lost in somebody else's life. Sometimes I'll read a sentence and it will make me sit up, jolt me, because it is something that I have recently felt but never said out loud. I want to reach into the page and tell the characters that I understand them, that they're not alone, that I'm not alone, that it's ok to feel like this.
This is how I usually rank a book…about the characters and the plot especially the shocking twists. But after reading Flawed, I’ve decided not to follow my original setting and gave it a rather high score.

You will be punished…
Celestine North lives a perfect life. She’s a model daughter and sister, she’s well-liked by her classmates and teachers, and she’s dating the impossibly charming Art Crevan.
But then Celestine encounters a situation where she makes an instinctive decision. She breaks a rule and now faces life-changing repercussions. She could be imprisoned. She could be branded. She could be found flawed.
In her breathtaking young adult debut, bestselling author Cecelia Ahern depicts a society where perfection is paramount and flaws lead to punishment. And where one young woman decides to take a stand that could cost her everything.

I am a girl of definitions, of logic, of black and white.
To be honest, if we only discuss the main plot and how does the story go…this book is nothing. Plain, flat…not worth reading. Since it actually has nothing surprise me…just normal dystopian with a perfect girl turning all away round. Familiar? I thought so. However, it’s the world building behind the book and the words that is truly inspiring. Not amazing, not thrilling…but every word every sentence will make you think. In fact, it was the ultimately some of the reflection of the 21st century. Celestine is a perfect girl born in a perfect family within a perfect system country. She is beautiful, smart, a straight A student, with a perfect boyfriend whose father happens to be one of the most authorized people in their country. Unlike other dystopian building, the issue isn’t about the enormous gap of poor and wealth, tyranny, and ultimate power. But instead, the book was about a perfect system, a world no other difference than us, except that there is a Flawed system within. The Flawed aims to eliminate all the moral issues within the country. Lying and cheating might not be a crime, but it’s a flawed. And once you’re found, you would be put into trial and mostly, more than 99%, was sentenced a flawed person and branded with iron mark, forever remain despise by the society.

I know the difference between right and wrong. I understand the rules. But today I feel that the rules have been blurred, because today they were literally on my front doorstep.
The most terrifying thing about this system is that—how do we defy “moral?” from the quotation, we know that Celestine cares only about logic, and in her mind, there will only be black and white, no in-between. Until the tragic event comes. Throughout the book, we readers can see Celestine kept questioning the guild, and gradually, her acts inspired other to rebel…even her own perfect family. what shock me the most is that this is actually a problem lies within our society as well…we might not be facing the immediate danger as the characters did, but a lot of people are sure affected by this kind of “moral high ground.” It seems, the world has established its own rule and forced everyone to follow exact behavior of ethical and moral. If you’re not considered as one of them, then you’re a threat to the society. The public will do nothing but to hunt you down. The entire newspaper might be all yours, the network, the TV news, the broadcast… it’s terrifying. Moreover, it brings hatred to the world. People are judging each other by their own moral and ethical, yet they might not be applicable to every country in the world. In that case, argument and quarrel are in sight.
It reminds me that when we’re still in the debate team, moral questions are usually the hardest topic to be debated. In my first debate contest, we’ve been discuss about whether organ should be traded legally. When it comes to the cons, we usually mentioned that it is “against the moral.” But what is the moral? How can you prove that your moral are better? How can you prove that your moral are indeed his moral as well? And within this book? I can’t help reminding myself about this issues I’ve longed been debating with myself.

Power. It's all about that, don't you forget. People want money or power.
Another issue that is so similar to our reality is power. Whenever there are terrorist attacks, upcoming election…you can see how dark the politic is. Let along all of our laws and constituent regulations. I’ve always questioned the politic and have always known that all are nothing but the fight of power. Are there any leaders who wish for the world’s better? Of course there are…but the majority of them are fighting to gain more power. The established of Flawed is indeed one of its methods, and gaining its power and growing territory is not far from it as well. Having Flawed systems are a way of control, to control the thought, the ideas and the acts of its people. Like I say, how do you defy moral? If there isn’t a standard, how can you punish someone simply by “breaking the moral rules?” Let along the following punishment is far greater than being a criminal. It freezes me as I read through the entire book, yet I can’t tear my eyes down.

I’ve learned that to be courageous is to feel fear within, every step of the way. Courage does not take over, it fights and struggles through every word you say and every step you take. It’s a battle or a dance as to whether to let it pervade. It takes courage to overcome, but it takes extreme fear to be courageous.
If you’re a reader simply finding another read without thinking about the book? Then I will talk you out of it. If you’re interested in the issues that I’ve mentioned above yet never take a second thought? Then you might want to take a look at it and start thinking about the current world, how terrifying the resemblance is. If you’ve been an expert? Then think about how this book can inspire a change to the world. I actually recommend this book to all ages, all back ground, especially when you’re at the leading point. It’s worth having a serious thinking after reading this book. Read it, and think. And btw, this is such a serious review that I’m having a headache now.
